Puerto de la Cruz se convertirá del 7 al 10 de mayo en la gran trama de las artes escénicas contemporáneas en Canarias con la celebración de la 24ª edición del Festival Internacional de Arte en la Calle MUECA. El evento reunirá a 44 compañías locales, nacionales e internacionales que ofrecerán un total de 105 representaciones en 20 espacios urbanos, en la programación más amplia de su historia.

El festival está impulsado por el Ayuntamiento de Puerto de la Cruz, el área de Cultura y la plataforma ciudadana Cómplice MUECA, que celebra este año su 15º aniversario.

El alcalde de Puerto de la Cruz, Leopoldo Afonso, destacó durante la presentación que MUECA representa “una forma de hacer ciudad a través de la excelencia artística y la creación emergente”, subrayando que se trata de “un motor de convivencia consolidado como proyecto colectivo y seña de identidad del municipio”. Además, recordó que el festival celebrará sus bodas de plata en 2027, poniendo en valor su crecimiento desde lo local hasta convertirse en una referencia internacional.

Por su parte, la concejala de Cultura, Desiré Díaz, incidió en que el festival “se desarrolla desde lo público para el público” y destacó su impacto en la economía local, al dinamizar el comercio, la hostelería y generar oportunidades, además de reforzar la identidad cultural de la ciudad.

El consejero insular de Cultura, José Carlos Acha, felicitó al municipio por un festival que calificó como “el culmen de las manifestaciones culturales en el norte de la isla” y un “polo de atracción esencial”.

En representación de la plataforma Cómplice MUECA, Elena González destacó los 15 años de trayectoria del colectivo, subrayando que el festival es fruto de la participación ciudadana y de la convicción de que la cultura es una herramienta para construir comunidad.

También intervinieron representantes de empresas colaboradoras, que destacaron la importancia de la colaboración público-privada, así como la apuesta por la mejora del espacio público, la educación y la accesibilidad cultural.

Bajo el lema #tejiendoMUECA, el festival sacará el arte a la calle con teatro, circo, danza y música para todos los públicos, ampliando espacios y horarios e incorporando nuevos escenarios como el Espacio TOTI Aqualia. La cita refuerza su carácter internacional con compañías como Circa y el creador francés Yoann Bourgeois, junto a propuestas de varios países, sin perder el protagonismo de las formaciones canarias.

Durante cuatro días, calles, plazas y espacios emblemáticos como el Lago Martiánez, la Plaza de la Iglesia o la Playa de San Telmo se transformarán en un escenario vivo donde arte, ciudadanía y espacio urbano se entrelazan, consolidando a MUECA como una de las grandes citas culturales de Canarias.

Puerto de la Cruz will become, from 7 to 10 May, the main hub of contemporary performing arts in the Canary Islands with the celebration of the 24th edition of the MUECA International Street Arts Festival. The event will bring together 44 local, national and international companies offering a total of 105 performances across 20 urban spaces, making it the most extensive programme in its history.

Under the motto #tejiendoMUECA, the festival will take art to the streets with theatre, circus, dance and music for all audiences, expanding venues and schedules and incorporating new spaces such as the TOTI Aqualia Area. The event strengthens its international profile with companies such as Circa and French creator Yoann Bourgeois, alongside proposals from several countries, while maintaining a strong presence of Canarian performing arts companies.

The festival is promoted by the City Council of Puerto de la Cruz, the Department of Culture, and the citizen platform Cómplice MUECA, which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year.

The Mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, Leopoldo Afonso, highlighted during the presentation that MUECA represents “a way of building the city through artistic excellence and emerging creation,” stressing that it is “a driver of coexistence consolidated as a collective project and a hallmark of the municipality.” He also noted that the festival will celebrate its silver anniversary in 2027, underlining its growth from a local initiative to an international reference.

The Councillor for Culture, Desiré Díaz, stated that the festival “is developed from the public for the public” and highlighted its impact on the local economy, boosting commerce, hospitality and opportunities, while strengthening the city’s cultural identity.

The Island Councillor for Culture, José Carlos Acha, congratulated the municipality on a festival he described as “the culmination of cultural expressions in the north of the island” and “an essential attraction hub.”

From Turismo de Tenerife, Managing Director Dimple Melwani emphasised that MUECA “enriches the tourist experience with an authentic, innovative proposal connected to the territory,” reinforcing the island’s position as a cultural destination.

Representing the Cómplice MUECA platform, Elena González highlighted the collective’s 15-year trajectory, stressing that the festival is the result of citizen participation and the belief that culture is a tool for building community.

Representatives of collaborating companies also underlined the importance of public-private cooperation, as well as the commitment to improving public space, education and cultural accessibility.

Over four days, streets, squares and emblematic spaces such as Lago Martiánez, Church Square and San Telmo Beach will be transformed into a living stage where art, citizens and urban space intertwine, consolidating MUECA as one of the major cultural events in the Canary Islands.

Die Kulturdezernentin Desiré Díaz hob hervor, das Festival werde „vom öffentlichen Sektor für die Öffentlichkeit“ entwickelt und habe einen deutlichen Einfluss auf die lokale Wirtschaft, da es Handel, Gastronomie und Beschäftigung fördere und die kulturelle Identität der Stadt stärke.

Das Festival wird vom Rathaus Puerto de la Cruz, dem Kulturamt sowie der Bürgerplattform Cómplice MUECA organisiert, die in diesem Jahr ihr 15-jähriges Bestehen feiert.

Unter dem Motto #tejiendoMUECA bringt das Festival Theater, Zirkus, Tanz und Musik für alle Zielgruppen auf die Straße und erweitert dabei sowohl die Spielorte als auch die Zeitfenster. Neu hinzu kommt unter anderem der Bereich TOTI Aqualia. Das Festival stärkt seine internationale Ausrichtung mit Kompanien wie Circa aus Australien und dem französischen Künstler Yoann Bourgeois sowie weiteren Beiträgen aus verschiedenen Ländern, ohne die starke Präsenz kanarischer Gruppen zu verlieren.

Der Bürgermeister von Puerto de la Cruz, Leopoldo Afonso, betonte bei der Präsentation, MUECA sei „eine Form, Stadt durch künstlerische Exzellenz und zeitgenössische Kreation zu gestalten“ und ein „Motor des Zusammenlebens sowie ein identitätsstiftendes Projekt der Gemeinde“. Zudem verwies er darauf, dass das Festival 2027 sein 25-jähriges Jubiläum feiern wird und sich von einer lokalen Initiative zu einem internationalen Referenzereignis entwickelt hat.

Der Inselkulturbeauftragte José Carlos Acha bezeichnete das Festival als „Höhepunkt der kulturellen Ausdrucksformen im Norden der Insel“ und als „wesentlichen Anziehungspunkt“.

Für Turismo de Tenerife erklärte Geschäftsführerin Dimple Melwani, MUECA bereichere das touristische Angebot „mit einem authentischen, innovativen und territorial verankerten Kulturprogramm“ und stärke die Position Teneriffas als kulturelles Reiseziel.

Elena González von der Plattform Cómplice MUECA betonte die 15-jährige Arbeit der Initiative und erklärte, das Festival sei das Ergebnis bürgerschaftlicher Beteiligung und der Überzeugung, dass Kultur ein Instrument zum Aufbau von Gemeinschaft sei.

Auch die beteiligten Unternehmen unterstrichen die Bedeutung der öffentlich-privaten Zusammenarbeit sowie die Aufwertung des öffentlichen Raums, Bildung und kulturelle Zugänglichkeit.

Während vier Tagen verwandeln sich Straßen, Plätze und emblematische Orte wie Lago Martiánez, der Kirchplatz oder der Strand von San Telmo in eine lebendige Bühne, auf der sich Kunst, Öffentlichkeit und urbaner Raum miteinander verweben und MUECA als eines der bedeutendsten Kulturereignisse der Kanarischen Inseln festigen.
